Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send one teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. This nationwide televised event pits the teenagers against each other in a deadly game of life or death, where “Tributes” must fight until only one remains. Katniss Everdeen of District 12 volunteers to take her sister Primrose’s place and is paired with fellow district competitor Peeta Mellark. [3]The pair are escorted to the Capitol by chaperone Effie Trinket and mentor Haymitch Abernathy.
During their time in the training center, Katniss and Peeta learn about the Games’ rules and regulations. They are also taught how to appeal to sponsors, who will provide life-saving supplies for the contestants. They are encouraged to win the public’s support by generating excitement and creating tension. This is no easy task, as the Capitol’s propaganda minister, Seneca Crane, makes their progress difficult.
After the Games, Katniss and Peeta escape from the arena and find themselves in District 13, a secret underground headquarters for the rebellion. Here, they meet the Rebellion’s president, Alma Coin (Julianne Moore). She asks Katniss to help them win the hearts and minds of the other districts by filming propaganda videos and fighting against the oppressive regime of the Capitol. Katniss agrees, but she has an ulterior motive: to kill President Snow[4].
Directed by Gary Ross, The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, and Donald Sutherland as President Snow. Tom Blyth will play the character, while Rachel Zegler will portray his protégé, Lucy Gray Baird. She is courageous, selfless and loyal to her friends. The movie promotes positive role models and the value of loyalty. It also promotes the importance of community and friendship.
