9-1-1 is only for emergencies

You might have heard the phrase 9-1-1 is only for emergencies, but that is not necessarily true. Calling 9-1-1 is always a good idea, but not every situation is an emergency. When you’re in doubt, call 9-1-1 instead. The operator will determine if the situation is truly an emergency and dispatch the appropriate resources. You should never call 9-1-1 for general information, however. You should only call if you’re experiencing a life-threatening emergency.

While the 9-1-1 system was originally marketed as a “nine-eleven” service, this changed after panicked people tried to find an “eleven” key. Today, 9-1-1 is always referred to as “nine-one-one.” This system is standardized by the National Emergency Number Association (NEMA). Some media require 9-1-1 to be spelled in this way. In fact, many people are using the 911 system incorrectly.

When you dial 9-1-1, you’ll be connected to a call center owned by your phone company. Most call center operators are not trained emergency service providers. Instead, they try to connect you to the proper service by connecting you to the nearest PSAP or directing you to a PSAP in the general area of the emergency. However, this is not always an option. If you’re unsure of where you live, consider using your parents’ names instead.

You can also text 9-1-1 to request help. A text to 9-1-1 operator will be able to respond within seconds. The text should contain your location and the emergency services you’re in need of. Be sure not to use any slang when texting, because it can give the operator the right information. The message will be sent to the nearest call center. Make sure you put 911 in the “to” field to receive a response.

If you live in an area without a dedicated non-emergency dispatch phone number, call the nearest county dispatch center for assistance. The Sheriff’s Department operates three dispatch centers in the county. Call 911 in cases of emergency. However, for non-emergency situations, call your local dispatch center. For example, residents of Temecula or Moreno Valley should call the number above.

When you call 9-1-1, you should be ready to answer the phone, whether it is an emergency or not. The operator will be able to assess whether you need immediate action or if you can just hang up and call back. If you are not in an emergency, you should call a non-emergency number instead. If you’re calling for assistance, you should speak clearly and speak in plain English.

It’s not all crimes, however. Sometimes, an incident may not be an emergency, and in such cases, you’ll want to contact the police yourself. Using a non-emergency number will allow you to report a crime without wasting precious police time. The same applies if you have a TDD or TTY. The non-emergency number will be listed on your city’s official phone directory, and it’s easy to find it.
