The School of the Mercantile Library was founded in 1835 by a group of Cincinnati merchants and clerks who wanted to establish a library that would provide books for their business activities. The library was built and funded by members who paid dues and pooled their books together.

The Mercantile Library also has a large collection of railroad and river travel materials, including the first known images of an American railroad on wallpaper from the 1820s.
