If you have not yet downloaded the Google Meet app, you can do so by going to the app store on your mobile device and searching for ‘Google Meet’. It will ask you to give permission for the application to have access to your device.

In addition to Google’s standard Hangouts platform, Meet is a business-focused edition of the popular chat tool that requires Google Suite.[4] Its main selling point is the ability to host meetings of up to 25 participants, a number that should be plenty for most small businesses and enterprises.

The app comes with Calendar integration and a four-piece hardware kit, reminiscent of HighFive. Its touchscreen controller lets an administrator mute and control the camera, while a speakermic cleans up audio by eliminating echo and background noise.

Another new feature is the ability to transcribe your meetings. Those who opt-in for this service will have the transcript saved alongside the original meeting in their ‘Meeting Recordings’ folder.[5]

Google has also announced that the app will soon automatically frame video before a meeting, so all participants have equal visibility. This should make the experience more transparent for both host and participant, especially in large meetings.

Students can join the meet from their computers, smartphones, or tabs as long as they have an internet connection and a working microphone/camera.

After you have accessed the Google Meet page, click on the meeting you would like to participate in. This will bring you to a screen where you can see the list of participants. When you get to the meeting landing page, you will be prompted to allow the application to use your computer’s microphone and camera. Once you’ve done so, you should see your webcam image, together with a green Join Meeting button.

Once you’re in the meeting, click on the record button in the lower right corner of the window. This will record your session in a high quality video.

Once you’ve recorded your meeting, it can be shared with others, or stored on your Google Drive for future reference. You can even send it to your colleagues in another department using a Google group email. Once the event is created, select “Add guests” and add your students’ email addresses. Then, click “Send” to send the invites. Guests will receive an email with the event information and a link to join the video meeting. They can also forward the invitation to others.
